You’ve already seen the massive building off Interquest. And if you’re like me, you’ve wondered: what the heck is a Scheels?

I mean, I’d heard things, I had an idea of it in my mind—but actually experiencing a Scheels completely exceeded my expectations. Like, over and over again.

The first Scheels was built in 1902 in Sabin, Minnesota for $300. A real American dream. Now it’s one of the largest sporting goods stores in the country with 28 locations (and counting).

Ok, but it’s not a LOCAL Colorado business. I get it. But here are some good reasons not to snub Scheels...

Scheels is Employee-Owned.

They began their employee stock ownership program in 1991, and today Scheels remains 100% employee-owned and is one of the largest ESOP companies in the US. After chatting with some of the employees of the Springs location you really get the sense that they LOVE their job. There are massive posters and electronic screens of their local employees doing what they love (hiking, hunting, fishing) everywhere in the store. The employees are essentially also models for the brand. And guess what? They are hiring!  Apply here!

They give back to the community.

Scheels gives 8-10% back annually to local communities. And last year Scheels associates donated over 3,000 hours to organizations such as United Way, The Refuge Garden Program, and others.

They carry local products.

In addition to Air Force Academy gear, you can find Colorado brands like Cougar Baits, Dynamic Baits, Biobait, SRAM, Scratch Labs, Honey Stinger, Feedback Sports, and more.

It's REALLY fun.

Some of Scheels family-forward attractions include:

  • A 65 ft. Ferris Wheel.

  • A 16,000-gallon salt-water tank with 700 exotic fish.

  • Fuzziwig’s Candy Factory.

  • Interactive arcade games.

  • A mini bowling alley.

  • Animated famous athletes.

  • Scheels Toy Land with a 6-foot tall lego attraction.

  • Bronze statues by the Lundeen family of Loveland, CO.

  • A full-service restaurant and bakery featuring Denver-based Little Man Ice Cream.

Scheels Colorado Springs opens March 27th!
